Sea Glass

People who live in the interior of the country, or on mountains, or in the plains, or have not been near large bodies of water like the great lakes or oceans might not know sea glass refers to tiny bits of glass that have been smoothed by tumbling in sand and water. They have a grainy look with no sharp edges.  I don’t know how long it takes, but my romantic concept is many, many years.  I’ve collected sea class from Atlantic, Pacific and Lake Michigan beaches. Green seems to be the most common color and then white and brown. It is very rare to find cobalt blue and I have never found red.  Now that it is October, there are fewer people on beaches and more off-season storms push debris on shore. The following pictures are of ransom pieces of sea glass on a Chicago beach. It was a good day.  If you cannot identify 7 pieces in the first picture, then the second picture has them circled.  Click on image to see larger picture

Rally October 5th

Yesterday I attended a rally in Chicago sponsored by The World Can’t Wait and marched. Over 200 cities had similar demonstrations against the current administration’s approach towards torture, their stand against Habeas Corpus and the policy of giving the President more power. About 1500 people marched and many with posters that were handmade. There were a wide variety of messages and the rally brought together people from the far left as well as conservative points of view, veterans as well conscientious objectors. Many think the new legislation will be thrown out in the courts.  The rally was to raise consciousness and to make sure we are not complacent.  We cannot let this new world challenge change our values.  The following pictures show the variety of signs (a collage of some of them) and people from all walks of life (students to seniors, different ethnic groups, dressed for work on their lunch hour to jeans and costumes, families and individuals). Contrasts

Contrasts add interest to art, dance and music, but contrasts in politics or religion create animosity and war.

Artificial versus Real

How do we know what is real?  Identity.  Fabric.  Information.  Feelings.  Brand.  Authority.  Memories.  Photographs.  Signatures.  Hair.  Nails.  Emperor’s new clothes.

Identity – who, where, when, why …

City Birds

Birds that adapt well to the city are the starling, sparrow and pigeon.  A nice video about birds in the city:

Many others stop by only in the Spring and Fall.  September begins the fall migration:

The Dog Days of Summer

When the temperature in Chicago reaches the 90s, it is estimated that about 2,000 fire hydrants a day are opened.  Stone and cement in the city intensifies the heat and people find different ways to cope. As in the following pictures, there are always the parks.  Click on image to see larger picture
